Rabaul

“Rabaul, The Impregnable Ww2 Japanese Fortress”

Unconquered and bypassed by the allies until war’s end.

This unique and beautiful natural harbor, with its extinct volcanic rim buttress was the fortress that MacArthur was unable to conquer in WW2. Come with us and explore the literally hundreds of miles of man-made tunnels, (even tunnels at water level to hide vessels), fantastic shipwrecks, the submarine base, Yamamoto’s bunker, the hangman’s site, aircraft and the huge Japanese fortifications. Rabaul is second only to Truk Lagoon in divable shipwrecks, thanks to Operation Cartwheel in November 1943 which left some 42,000 tons of ships sunk or badly damaged in Rabaul Harbour.
